Thomas and Catherine

The banns of Thomas (Morant) Murrant and Catherine Sutherland were read in St Georges Church in Sydney in Feb. 1846, (the record shows 1846 but it was most likely 1847 as Aurelia died in 1846), Catherine and Thomas were married on 9 March 1847 by Rev. W. Porter.

THOMAS MURRANT and CATHERINE SUTHERLAND had one child:

          i. CATHERINE MURRANT, she was born on September 01, 1849, in South Head, Cow Bay, Cape Breton. She marries a  JOHN HENRY CLARKE, December 10, 1872 in Cow Bay, Cape Breton. Apparently it was a short and tumultuous relationship. She died in 1928 and is buried in Port Morien.

The census records of 1901 record Catherine Clarke, mother, Christine (Christine Anne Sutherland Clarke) ( 24) daughter, born after the marriage to Clark and grand daughter, Philamena, born in 1896. There is no record of the father. In 1901 she and her daughter and grand daughter lived adjacent to Eddy Murrant , Charles Peters and Rachel Murrant.

The census of 1911, polling district # 12, district 14 , Port Morien, South Side page 20, family # 194 lists Katie Clark born April 1849 and her daughter "PILOMENA", (obviously Philomena) born January, 1896, 15 years at the time. She records herself as presbyterian and of Scottish descent, obviously her mothers ancestry. She had no income and was not employed. Christine, her daughter had married and left home. Catherine however is looking after the granddaughter.
